Single Review – Rosewood ‘Skeletons’

Rosewood’s new single ‘Skeletons’ came out on 4th April and I had a listen to see what it was all about.

The five piece indie-rock band from Edinburgh already have two previous single releases under their belt, and their sound has been compared to the likes of Wolf Alice and Peach Pit.

So, I had high hopes for their new song before I even had a listen. I popped it on in the car while I was doing some errands, and that coupled with the fabulous sunshine we have been having in Scotland the last few days, seemed to be the perfect setting for this upbeat  tune!

They have said it is a song about ‘loneliness, self-acceptance and resilience’ and inspired by the ‘feeling of 80’s coming of age movies’. I would completely agree with this. It has a sort of build up that makes you feel like you can take on anything the day has to throw at you.

I loved the nostalgic guitar riffs, and the powerful vocals from singer Alicia. Her voice reminds me very much of Jacqui Abbott from The Beautiful South. I really liked the way the song grips you right from the start and crescendos into a big chorus mid way, then gets gentle towards the end…it’s like being on a journey of self discovery and finally reaching that realisation you’d been hoping for.

I also need to talk about the lyrics as they were well thought out and put together. The very last line of the song  ‘Woke up in the rain again, feeling colours creeping in’ completely sums up the feelings they were trying to portray with this tune. It’s like having hope even when things seem impossible, tomorrow is another day.

If you are having a bad day and looking for a great wee song to bring you out of the darkness and back into the sunshine then check out Skeletons.

Rosewood are playing at Leith Depot in Edinburgh, on 21st April if you want to catch them live.
