Single Preview -Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 – Wild Flowers

Words by Kenny Ross

I took a listen to “Wild Flowers” by Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, featuring the Dumfries Community Choir – This is a belter of a tune that radiates joy, warmth, and a proper dose of Scottish soul. It’s a musical celebration of individuality and togetherness, with the choir’s heartfelt harmonies weaving beautifully through the band’s signature blend of funk, ska, indie, and disco. This track reminds me a lot of the band Embrace, when they were in their Indie prime, with a splash of Arcade Fire thrown in for good measure!

The result is a track that feels like a big musical hug – the kind you’d get at a summer festival, surrounded by pals, dancing in wellies……..and hoping the rain holds off!!!

The Dumfries Community Choir brings a rich texture to the song, lifting the chorus sky-high and adding emotional depth that complements the band’s playful yet meaningful vibe. The lyrics, while simple, carry a powerful message: like wildflowers, we’re all different, but together we create something beautiful. It’s a sentiment that fits perfectly with the ethos of Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 – a band that’s more movement than music, spreading peace, love, and mustard wherever they go.

They are led by the charismatic John McAlinden, aka Colonel John Thomas Mustard, the band is a colourful collective of characters with names as wild as their sound. From Gary Mortimer on bass (Archduke Mortimer Winthorpe 3rd Marquis of Denmark) to Kirstin McNair on trumpet (Badges McBuffters), and Disco Colin on keys (The Inflatable Ginger Party Vortex), each member brings their own flavour to the mix.

Their gigs are legendary – part concert, part comedy, part community gathering – and always unforgettable.
This track will be released on 1st August, with some B-sides included, including a brand-new track, “Be Good To Yourself,” featuring the powerhouse vocals of Mary Kiani (known to some as the “Scottish Songbird”). It’s shaping up to be a summer full of mustard, music, and memories.

The band are also set to play the iconic Barrowland Ballroom on Sunday 31st August for a special Marie Curie and Beatson fundraiser in honour of their close pal and Scottish music scene legend Soapy. Hosted by Gavin Mitchell – the beloved actor best known as Boaby the Barman from the TV show Still Game (2 pints prick?) – the night will feature a host of bands, each performing a cover of a song by James, Soapy’s favourite band. Phil Jupitus will be the DJ on the night also! – It promises to be a heartfelt and high-energy tribute to a man who meant so much to so many – Tickets for this are limited and available here: SOAPYFEST.

All in all, “Wild Flowers” is more than just a song – it’s a reminder that even in a world full of chaos, there’s still beauty, kindness in humanity, and songs that make you want to dance. It’s a track that’ll make you smile, sing along, and maybe even join the Yellow Movement yourself. (Applications are Open!)

Keep an eye on their Socials and Spotify for the release.
