Demi and the Urge is the solo music project of Edinburgh-based drag performer, Demi Urge. This EP dropped recently in May, though it has been in the works as far back as 12 years ago.

Before I even hit play on this EP, I was excited by the cover- a dynamic mix of hot pink and jet black with Demi wearing their signature graphic eyeliner (a la Siouxie and the
Banshees!). Their look is striking, blending campy drag and harking back to the stylings of classic goth icons- and their sound is no different.

‘Tragic’ marks an explosive start to the EP with pounding electronic drums and a deep synth bassline clearly reminiscent of the 80s. This song surrounds you with layers of reverb and immediately reminded me of Depeche Mode, especially with Demi’s voice occupying that unique space between speaking and singing.
Demi and the Urge’s lyrics are theatrical and melodramatic, often using sweeping metaphors for maximum emotional impact. This is especially clear in my personal favourite song from the EP, ‘Other’, which stood out as a powerful example of Demi’s lyrical talent. In this song they strike the perfect balance between the raw and personal and the more abstract, exploring themes of identity, social isolation and gender.

‘Never Had a Heart’ is a glittering ballad, punctuated by synth arpeggios and oozing with emotion. The drum line reminded me of a beating heart, encapsulating everything Demi and The Urge is about- fighting back no matter what and letting your heart carry you through.
‘What Do You Believe In’ ends the EP on a brooding but powerful note. This song best encapsulates the meaning behind Demi and the Urge’s band name. A ‘demiurge’ in their own words, is a ‘creator deity that falls short of being god in some way’. The synth melodies are hypnotic as Demi directly addresses the listener, posing questions of morality and forgiveness.
Despite this being their musical debut, Demi and the Urge has already managed to create a cohesive and distinct artistic identity. ‘As Above, So Below?’ feels authentic and hypnotic, expertly exploring difficult and heavy subjects with religious imagery and a glamorous flair. Demi and the Urge is definitely someone to watch, and I look forward to their next project!
