Single Review – ‘Calm Calm’ by Save Face

I was sent “Calm Calm” by Save Face to review for Qulture Magazine. The band, made up of members from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, have been playing together for just over a year and lean into a folky, alternative rock sound. Formed with a shared interest in emotionally driven music. Save Face seem to have quickly built a name for themselves on the Scottish live music scene.. Despite being a relatively new act, they’ve already supported a number of local artists and are steadily growing their following.

The track is soft and slow-paced, with a calm, ambient feel throughout. It doesn’t build to anything big or overly intruding, but instead stays reflective and consistent. Singer/guitarist Calum’s vocals are gentle and steady, which gives the song a slightly uneasy, reflective tone—like someone trying to stay composed, but somewhat failing inside quietly.

Hannah’s vocals also feature on this track, and they blend nicely with the rest of the arrangement. They have since left the band to study in Amsterdam, and their replacement, Katt, doesn’t appear on this recording. The trumpet, played by Phoebe, adds a wee unique touch that gives the song a bit of character without taking over and adds diversity to their overall sound.

The production is minimal and lo-fi, which suits the mood. It’s not flashy, but it’s clearly been put together with passion & care. As I have mentioned in my previous reviews, I usually like my music a lot heavier, but I can still absolutely appreciate the thought and feeling that’s gone into writing and recording this tune.

VERDICT: In a nutshell, personally, I would give this song a solid 4 stars out of 5. Good tune, well written and performed, with each band members heart & soul poured into it – I am sure this won’t be the last we hear from Save Face.
