Fringe Review – Lesbian Space Crime – Pleasance Dome –  4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Words: Clíona McCann

Lesbian Space Crime is a new musical comedy by London-based company Airlock Theatre, following astronaut Sue Brightman as she battles career-ending accusations from her ex-wife, all while being outed to NASA and struggling to connect with her son. It explores themes of parenthood, identity and rainbow-washing and is DEFINITELY not based on a true story…

This show was an absolute joy to watch. It’s difficult to choose who to keep your eyes on as all three performers are complete scene-stealers. I must praise Eleanor Colville, in particular- her line delivery Gaia, Sue’s evil almost-ex wife, is simply hysterical.

The songs are catchy and sharp, and every character is perfectly ridiculous. The irreverent sense of humour and huge heart in this show strongly reminded me of the Starkid musicals. Lesbian Space Crime does nothing in half measures; everything is over the top in the best way possible.

The writing is witty and dynamic and interweaves queer cultural references throughout the script without feeling forced. This show truly feels like it’s been authentically made for the queer community rather than pandering to those on the outside. It speaks directly to queer people rather than opting to entertain everyone else using our experiences.

You don’t have to be a lesbian to have a blast at this show- or a space criminal.

Lesbian Space Crime is on at 14:50 every day at the Pleasance Dome until 25th August. For more queer chaos, check out Count Dykula, also by Airlock Theatre.
