Single Review – MOLETRAP ‘Chickens’ – 4/5⭐⭐⭐⭐

Words: Madi Briggs

MOLETRAP fought back against the commodification of their hometown with the latest single ‘Chickens’, taken from their upcoming EP ‘Mid Welsh Pt.2’.

Everything about this explosive single screams pop-punk, specifically early Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco!. With its angular guitar riffs, punchy drums and thumping bass, I can’t help but fall a bit deeper in love every time I listen and I’m certain that’ll be the case too when you get a chance to listen to this very fine tune.

The anger behind the track is evident from the very start but it’s not too overstated with the rolling drum beat. However, the band somehow manages to strike a fine balance between overwhelm and calm, making for a song which I stuck on again… and again… It’s certainly one of the band’s strengths, which they play excellently in ‘Chickens’. The part that really stood out to me though was near the end where the entire song seems to take a step back. Rather than the expected ferociousness, everything quiets down with just the guitars powering the song and then the vocals come in, sounding more distant than before. Then, just as we’ve gotten used to this new dynamic, ‘Chickens’ bounces right back into what it was before, keeping us on our toes. Just as quickly as it started, it finishes with the mess of instruments becoming a distant memory.

‘Chickens’ as a whole is downright impressive and leaves me excited to see what the band has up their sleeves next!
